What is a Chartered Governance Professional Accountant?​

The Chartered Governance Professional Accountant (CGPA) qualification is a versatile program designed to equip you with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience needed to navigate real-world business challenges. This two-year program covers a wide range of modules in governance, accountancy, leadership, and company secretarial practice.

CGPAs possess a deep understanding of governance, accounting, company secretarial duties, risk management, law, and strategy. These professionals often work across listed companies, public sectors, and non-profits. As a CGPA, you’ll be expected to uphold the highest standards of governance and ethical behavior. Our members, highly valued by employers, are trusted advisors to boards, offering insights on legal, financial, and strategic matters.

Who Can Join?

To start the journey, you need:

  • At least 2 A-Level passes, with 5 O-Level passes, including English and Mathematics/Accounts.
  • Tertiary education holders may be eligible for exemptions.

LLB graduates get automatic exemptions for Parts A and B

What Does the Qualification Cover?

The qualification consists of four levels:

Pre-professional Level (Parts A & B)

  • Business Accounting: Financial Accounting fundamentals.
  • Business Economics: Economic principles in business contexts.
  • Business Law: Key laws governing business operations.
  • Business Communication & Ethics: Modern business challenges.
  • Business Statistics & IT: Application of statistical methods and IT.
  • Human Resources Management: Managing people and performance.
  • Tax Law & Practice: Handling corporate and individual tax.

Professional Program (Parts C & D)

  • Corporate Law: In-depth study of corporate legal frameworks.
  • Advanced Accounting & Financial Reporting: Financial statement preparation.
  • Development of Strategy: Strategic development and implementation.
  • Cost & Management Accounting: Key skills for accounting functions.
  • Corporate Financial Management: Corporate financial planning.
  • Audit & Assurance: Internal and external audit practices.
  • Public Financial Management: Financial management in the public sector.
  • Corporate Secretarial Practice: Good governance and compliance.
  • Applied Governance, Risk & Compliance: Advanced governance practices.

After completing your exams, attendance at two summer/winter schools, and participation in the PECAMS program, you’ll be awarded your certification. Membership tiers include:

  • Associateship: For professionals with relevant work experience (ACG).
  • Fellowship: For senior professionals with leadership experience (FCG).

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION

Upon completion of the PSA Qualification, graduates are eligible to:

  • Apply for Associate Membership with the Chartered Governance and Accountancy Institute in Zimbabwe (CGI Zimbabwe).
  • Register with the Public Accountants and Auditors Board (PAAB) as Registered Public Accountants – RPAcc(Z).
